When is the Best Time to Take Newborn Photos? | Nashville, TN Parents

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life's most beautiful moments, and newborn photos are a timeless way to preserve those early days. One of the most common questions parents ask is: When is the best time to schedule a newborn photo session in Nashville, TN?

While every baby is unique, there is a sweet spot that photographers love for creating those soft, curled, sleepy images that many parents adore. Let's break it down so you can decide what works best for your family.

The Ideal time: 5-16 days old

The best time to capture classic newborn photos is when your baby is between 5 and 16 days old. During this window, babies are typically sleepier, more flexible, and still naturally curl into womb-like positions. This makes it easier to pose them gently and safely for those peaceful, cozy images.

At this stage:

  • babies sleep deeply and for longer stretches

  • They are less sensitive to being moved or posed

  • Skin is often clearer than in later weeks

  • They retain that tiny, just-born look

This is why most professional newborn photographers recommend scheduling in advance and booking your session within the first two weeks after your due date.

What if my baby is older than two weeks?

Don't worry, beautiful newborn photos are still absolutely possible in my studio near Nashville, TN, after the 16-day mark. The style of the session may simply shift a bit to more relaxed posing or swaddling more.

3-4 weeks old:

Babies may be more awake and less curly, but this is still a wonderful time to capture:

  • eye contact and expressions

  • stretching and natural movements

  • swaddled poses

  • lifestyle images with parents and siblings

4-8 weeks old:

At this age, babies are more alert and interactive. While they may not sleep through the session, you'll often capture:

  • sweet smiles and curious looks

  • stronger bonding moments

  • personality beginning to shine

These sessions feel more relaxed and natural, focusing on connection rather than posed sleep.

Preemies and NICU babies

For premature babies or those who spend time in the NICU, the timeline may look different. Sometimes I recommend scheduling based on slightly adjusted age rather than birth date. This allows your baby time to grow stronger while still capturing those newborn features.

Always communicate with your photographer; they can help guide you on the best timing based on your precious baby's individual needs.

When should I book my newborn session?

Ideally, book your newborn session during your second or early third trimester. You can pick a date that is within 16 days of your due date and adjust if needed once your baby arrives.

Booking early ensures:

  • availability during that ideal time window

  • less stress after delivery

  • time to plan your session style and preferences

If your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked yet, reach out anyway. I will do my absolute best to accommodate last-minute requests. I absolutely love newborn babies, and I always try my very best to squeeze in every baby I can.

No matter if baby is between the ideal 5-16 day window or in the 3-8 week window, newborn photography is about capturing the special bond between new parents and their precious baby, and the memories you'll want to remember forever.
